Uncommon Crochet: Twenty-Five Projects Made from Natural Yarns and Alternative Fibers

Uncommon Crochet: Twenty-Five Projects Made from Natural Yarns and Alternative Fibers Review

See more picture

Black leather granny squares are anything but square, and hot pink organic hemp gives crocheted vases a decidedly modern cachet. In Uncommon Crochet, designer Julie Armstrong Holetz applies new ideas and unconventional materials--like wire, raffia, jute, sisal, recycled belts, fabric strips, and felted beads--to twenty-five patterns for bins, baskets, totes, handbags, clutches, jewelry, and more. Step-by-step instructions, detailed how-to photographs, and essential advice about creativity, design, and experi-mentation encourage you to play with fiber, add funky embellishments, and use your creative spirit to customize any pattern--even the ones in this book! From practical containers like Red's Goodie Basket (a stylish home for your WIP--works in progress) and Vintage Satchel (a sturdy retro messenger bag) to just plain fun projects like Petite Fleur Vases (tiny bud vases that hold water) and Sushi (crocheted California rolls, anyone?), Uncommon Crochet offers fresh twists on old-school techniques that turn simple projects into gift-worthy creations.

Ski Cap / Beanie Crochet Pattern in Baby Yarn for Toddlers 1 - 3 Years Old

Ski Cap / Beanie Crochet Pattern in Baby Yarn for Toddlers 1 - 3 Years Old Review

See more picture

The crocheted hat / ski cap / beanie in this pattern has easy to read and follow instructions and uses less than 4 ounces of Acrylic (or Acrylic blends) baby yarn in Category 3 - light worsted weight - such as Lion Baby Soft, Bernat Baby Coordinates and others that recommend use of a US G/6 or 4.0 mm crochet hook.

Difficulty level is Easy to Intermediate.

The pattern for this hat / ski cap for toddlers 1 - 3 years of age makes a hat approximately 7 ¾ - 8” in height/length and 16 ¾ - 17” in circumference/width (unstretched) and should fit most toddlers who have head circumferences of between 18 - 19”. The hat / cap edge can be folded up to make a narrow or a deep brim to fit the depth of the child’s head.

The hat size in this pattern is approximate - not exact - because it is based on the “average” head circumferences of children of these ages. Head size varies from toddler to toddler the same as it varies from adult to adult, and some little one is sure to benefit from wearing this hat.

This hat / ski cap is made using Single Crochet stitches, and it is an ideal item to crochet and donate to hospital special care children’s units, to charities and to use as a gift.

Enjoy the adventures of Mary Frances as the crochet hook, knitting needles and yarn come to life, ready and anxious to teach her to knit and crochet. You will meet Crow Shay, Knit and Knack, Wooley Ball, Yarn Baby and a beautiful fairy as they take you though a series of lessons in a book that loves to be read aloud while teaching new skills in storybook format. Children will love the quaint language and captivating storyline alone, and by following along with the projects, they will be rewarded with needlework skills and a lovely collection of clothing for 14- to 18-inch dolls. Adults and doll collectors will appreciate the historical authenticity of the early 1900’s knitwear patterns. More than forty needlework projects are provided including doll hats, scarves, sweaters, shawls, a petticoat, leggings and more. Styles in knitwear are timeless fashion pieces. These projects can be used to create authentic period attire, or updated through the use of contemporary colors and accents. Modern girls can make their dolls look trendy by combining a piece of vintage knitwear with fashion-forward accessories. Black and white illustrations are featured on every page along with color cover illustrations. The Mary Frances Knitting and Crocheting Book 100th Anniversary Edition has been restored, updated, and expanded including a new introduction, larger format, and enhanced graphics plus present-day yarn, hooks and needles for projects to fit present-day dolls. Knitting and crocheting are valuable skills that can be learned at a young age. The rhythmic, repetitive movements are calming. They teach the value of patience and perseverance. They develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, concentration, math skills and self-esteem. Best of all is the feeling of accomplishment that comes from creating something beautiful and useful from a simple strand of yarn.
